It’s Not All About Money

The year is almost over, and that means a new year is about to start.  That also means that some employees are asking for raises.  But don’t worry – Many companies are not in a place to give raises to employees this year, and that is ok!  If that is you, here is a list of a few other things you can focus on giving your employees in 2014. 

I’m going to warn you, this is a list of feel good, fluffy things.  But no matter what you might think, these are things that are actually important to employees; many of them are more important than money to your employees.  Don’t be fooled though – just because I call them fluffy, doesn’t mean it’s easy.  In fact, most of the things on this list are hard and time consuming.  I promise it’s worth it though.  If you focus on a few of these feel good issues your employees will not only work for less, they’ll be happier and more productive. 

Treat your employees fairly and consistently. 

While almost everyone realizes that life isn’t fair, employees don’t want the boss to make life more unfair than it already is.  Employees hate favoritism.  

Be a boss your employees respect.

Employees want respect from the boss, of course, but just as strong is the need to feel respect for the boss!  Employees want to believe in that their boss is a leader who is worthy of their loyalty.

Really listen to your employees. 

Your employees often have concerns about the business, or great ideas and want to share them with you. Nothing is worse than working for someone who doesn’t care what you have to say.  You don’t have to take the advice your employees give you, but you should always listen. 

Encourage your employees to have a work/life balance.

For many managers/owners/bosses work is life; and you enjoy doing it all the time. However your employees may not feel the same way.  And if they do, it still doesn’t matter.  A work/life balance is important – it leads to more productive, engaged employees when they are at work.  And they appreciate that you want them to spend time with friends and family.
